Nacho's Great Adventure

Nacho at the Edith Cavell Glacier

Nacho deserves his own blog page from this glacier outing.  He had such a grand adventure.

First of all, it was warm, and there did not appear to be any threatening animals or steep cliffs, waterfalls, mosquitoes, etc. to worry about.

He had his picture taken with some Inuk‘shuks by the glacier lake.  And He sat on a big rock that had tumbled down the mountain.

He even posed on the glacier ice – although his feet got cold pretty quickly.

But then, he was posing on a rock, and a huge bird suddenly swooped down.  He must have spotted Nacho’s red hat, because he immediately started checking him out.  Nacho was very frightened. It reminded me of stories of Nils great adventures from the Swedish folk tales. He too, was a little guy threatened by a large bird.

Afterwards, we found out that this bird is a Clark’s Nutcracker.  He is a valuable part of the forest in that he stores seeds underground and many of them sprout into trees.  So, he probably wasn’t really interested in doing Nacho any harm, just curious1

On the way down the trail, Nacho posed with one of the little trees that are starting to grow into a forest where the glacier front used to be.  If the ice doesn't come back, a new forest will grow.

What a big day for Ignacio Gnome!
