West Glacier Park

We left East Glacier this morning and are moving around the base of the park to West Glacier.  As we climb a steep hill out of the valley, we have these views back of the mountains, and also drive through an area that has been completely devastated by fire.

At the top of the hill, we once again see the prairie and we straddle the hills between the mountains the the prairie.

We come to one of the lodges built for the railroad clientele.  This one is denoted by an entrance.  The hotel itself is large and sits across from the railroad depot.

On the grounds sits this small cottage surrounded by flowers.  It's very pretty and inviting.

The road around  the south of glacier follows the railroad, which is on the hill to the left.  What a view those passengers must have had in the early days.

We are on Route 2, which we will follow from here through Montana, and into Idaho and Washington.

The road starts to follow the Flathead River, which changes elevations, at times being close to the road, others in a gorge.  This is a popular rafting river and all along we see colorful red, yellow and blue rafts floating by.

At the west entrance is Lake McDonald  which is very pretty.  The terrane here is so much different from the eastern side.

As we leave the park, we can't help but reflect on the fact that we have spent the last few weeks almost entirely in National Parks.  They have been beautiful and enriching.  But somehow, it's the end of a major portion of our journey and it will soon be time to head toward home.
