Old Valdez and the Valdez Glacier

Valdez Glacier and Old Valdez

We drove out past the Valdez Glacier stream to the closest point of the Valdez Glacier.  It isn’t very visible from the road.  The history says that it was five miles from Valdez to the good of the glacier for the stampeders.  We drove about five miles, but were not close to the base, which has receded substantially in the interim.

Nevertheless, it was interesting, and we saw some close up views of the ice breaking off.
The ice crystals and kind of hexagonal, and much different than the crushed ice that we use.

Then we drove back down to the site of  Old Valdez.

They have a couple of signs there, but all that is left is a few remnants of the original pier.  There was a large boat docked there when the quake occurred, and it was rocked around pretty bad.  It came up on the shore and then was swept out again.  The memorial to those that died, about 32 people, indicates that several families were lost.  And quite a few children.  In a town as small as it was, everyone knew those who were swept out to sea.
