Visit to the North Pole

The North Pole

Only about 15 miles outside of Fairbanks is the North Pole.

With a population of about 2,000 it is a big place by Alaska standards.

The town was created 1944 by a couple of homesteaders who named in North Pole hoping to attract a toy manufacturer who could label his products as having been made at the North Pole.  In 1952, a fur buyer from Fairbanks started Santa Clause House.  It is a huge store, filled with everything imaginable related to Christmas.

All of the street lampposts in town look like candy canes, and McDonalds (one of the few I’ve seen) have their pole candy-cane striped.

There is a Santa Clause on duty at all times for pictures. And, there are caribou in the back.  They are shedding this time of year, and were kind of motley, so in the Christmas spirit, I won’t show a picture of them when they are not at their finest.

One big thing is letters and postcards postmarked from the North Pole – an absolute must for anyone stopping there!

This place is every woman’s dream and every husband’s nightmare.  A real shoppers paradise!
