We went through the Keystone Canyon once again as we left Valdez. We stopped to see the attempt at a railroad tunnel in those early gold rush days. The tunneling ended in a gun battle and this is what remains.
We went over the Thompson Pass and were up in the snow line in no time. In fact, there have been very few days on this trip that we haven’t seem snow in one form or another.
The most beautiful thing along this route is the Alaska Range, and we are fortunate that it is clearer today than it was when we went to Valdez.
We took the Cooper Center Loop, which is just a short highway bypass, and stopped at the Klutina River. It was running so fast! There was a family having a picnic right by the river, and I watched as the two little girls played right on the edge, throwing twigs and rocks into the river. One false step and they would have been history but no one seemed to be concerned! There were some fishermen here, but I cant imagine that any fish could see a lure in this water! It would whiz right by!
The view all along here is beautiful for almost the whole trip.
When we get to Tok, we opt for a campground right on the Tok River. Rocinante was happy to snuggle in the trees on what turned out to be a fairly warm evening.
