6633 North – We Made it!
We arrived at the Arctic Circle about 9:30 p.m. The sun was low in the sky and the clouds opened up, so we were in pouring rain and strong sunshine. Looking behind us, there was a perfect rainbow and portions of a double rainbow.
I had never seen all the spectrums of the rainbow quite so clearly. You could also see both ends of it. We were so close to the Arctic Circle, less than 1/2 a mile that it seemed like a very good omen!
In fact, our arrival at the Arctic Circle happened so quickly after that, the rainbow was still in our sight as we stood at the sign designating the Circle.
John couldn’t decide whether to take a picture of the sign, or continue with the rainbow. He sat up the camera for automatic shutter so we could take a picture of the two of us. The mosquitoes were so ferocious, they seemed to have been waiting for us. It was hard to take a picture without having a blur of rotary arms warding off the pesky critters.
Nacho came out to have his picture taken too.
We proceeded to a camp ground where there were flat areas carved out to park in. No amenities, but we were happy to get in our camper, listening to the mosquitoes literally beating against the screens. We stayed up until later, after midnight, looking at the evening light and marveling at the fact that we had actually accomplished our goal of reaching 6633 North!
Unfortunately, we had a window screen that had jarred open on the road. The mosquitoes came in with abandon all night. I gave up swatting at them at 2:30 am, not realizing the situation. I kept thinking that if I could just get this one last one I could get some sleep. It wasn’t until morning that I asked John to check his window. Our window screens have been very effective at keeping critters out – that is, when they are closed! In the morning, we were covered with bites and the bodies of dead mosquitoes that we managed to kill, some bloody – those being the ones that “got” us first!
