Talkeetna: What you didn't know about Warren G. Harding

What you didn't know  about Warren G. Harding.

There is a spur road off the Parks Highway to Talkeetna.  This is a definite tourist destination and is filled with tour buses.  It reminds you a little of Idyllwild or some small town that caters to the summer crowd.   It is also popular  as an aviation supply station and where climbers get their permits to attempt Mt. McKinley. It is a stop for the Railroad train to Denali.   The road is only 14 miles long, but it dumps you out in this little community full of shops and history.

One of them is Nagley's General Store, built in 1921 and in continuous operation since then.  Nagley made his money by giving miners a grubstake, and then when they couldn't pay, taking their mining claims in lieu of payment.   The store still accepts gold and furs from locals.

Also well known is the Fair View Inn. Built in 1923, the Inn is a favorite place for locals, features live music in its tiny bar area, and is famous for having hosted Warren G Harding several days before his death.  This is the subject of a separate posting.

Also in Talkeetna is a motel called Latitude 62.  So, we are getting close to our destination!

And John particularly liked this view of seaplanes on a nearby lake.
