Tundra Flwers

Tundra flowers

Most of these pictures were taken at the Tor rock formation area.  These flowers survive the bitter cold and the unbelievable wind here.

These first three pictures are of fireweed.  It takes over first after a forest fire.  The seeds are so interesting.  I thought when I first saw them that they were animal fur that had been scraped off.  Someone told me that when the last little blooms come out on top, there is six more weeks before winter starts.

Look at the pine tree.  It looks like it toppled over, but in fact, its root are in place, and it snakes along the ground and manages to have a full crown of branches, while laying on the ground.

I don’t know if they call these fox tails, but that is what we always called them.  They were growing beside the road, and in the late evening sun took on a purple iridescent hue.  Even though they are  considered a weed, they are pretty!
