A word about Cottonwood

A word about Cottonwood

We have been inundated with the “cotton” from cottonwood trees throughout our trip.  There are apparently several types of cottonwood, and there is a black cottonwood and a balsam popular here in Alaska that fit the profile.

At our campground in Denali, there was a cottonwood right outside our door, so we were able to get some close ups of the tree.

At the Chena River Campgrounds in Fairbanks, the amount of cotton on the ground was simply unbelievable, and at times during the day, the air was filled until it looked like snow.

And, it hung on the fir trees like snow.  It reminded me of pictures of old time Christmas trees that had cotton placed on the branches, and I wonder if this was the origin of this tradition.

It was so light, if you picked it up, the only sensation you had in your hand was if something else like a leaf had been caught in it.

At any rate if you are an allergy sufferer, living in Alaska, I feel sorry for you right now!
