Farmers Market in Homer

On Saturday we went to the Farmers Market.  It was very small.  Many of the people there were part of the Russian Orthodox community, of which they have two villages in the area.  They bring in bedding plants, handicrafts, homemade jams and jellys, and some produce.

The most plentiful crop right now is Rhubarb!  One of the women told me it grows up out of the snow, and is a beautiful pink and lime green, and it lets everyone know that Spring is on the way.  Lots of the jams and jellies were made with rhubarb in combination with something else -- raspberries, blueberries, etc., but there was also fireweed jelly and some made out of spruce tips.  I bought a small jar of both of these!

We also bought some seafood - scallops, canned smoked salmon, side striped shrimp, halibut jerky, and some smoked salmon bellies!  We are looking forward to having these treats along the way.  And we are on the lookout for some fresh salmon now that some of the ocean areas are catching them!
